If you’ve been on social media or seen the news in the past year or so, you’ve most likely seen both the outrage, and support, for NFL 49ers player, Colin Kaepernick, kneeling in protest against police brutality and racial injustice during the national anthem. This issue in particular, is almost evenly split down the middle in regards to peoples opinions on whether or not he should, or should even be allowed, do this. Although this story began in 2016, another wave of outrage from both sides has taken the media by storm.
Following some very disgusting comments made by Donald Trump, including one calling the kneeling players “son(s) of a b*tch”, athletes across the country are taking a knee during the anthem as a sign of solidarity. So essentially, Trump’s comments didn’t help his cause at all. Although most of what I’m seeing is outcry against Donald Trump, the few in our society who are offended by the kneeling, have several incredibly significant flaws in their argument.
First of all, Colin Kaepernick was not, and has never been anti-American or protested against the men and women who are in the United States military. The whole point of his movement is to protest against police brutality and the mistreatment of minorities. Statistics show that nearly 70 percent of the NFL consists of Black athletes; without them, there would be no NFL and no games to watch.
Secondly, you’re breaking the American flag code. Yes, you. And you know who else? Especially Trump. The U.S. Flag Code states that no imagery, words, or advertisement shall be placed on the flag. Additionally, the flag is not to be worn on clothes.
As you can see, Trump isn’t doing the best job at respecting the American flag in the first place. But look, I’m not going to say that other candidates haven’t done the same thing. That would be ignorant. However, if you are going to be nit picky about what constitutes as “disrespecting the flag”, you need to get it together and at least uphold the flag code. Theoretically, Trump can face fines and even jail time for advertising using the flag. I didn’t make this up. America came up with this.
Although moving past the arguments that have already been touched on, what I am most disturbed about regarding this situation is that while Trump referred to the white supremacists as “very fine people”, he refers to Black Americans who are exercising their freedom of speech and speaking out against racial injustice as “son(s) of a b*tch”. Donald Trump is so clearly proving himself to be a white supremacist. He’s not even trying to hide it at this point.
Open your eyes America.
